European Handball on the move in Perth –NOVA 93.7

Handball is causing a commotion in the suburbs with the recent commitment by NOVA 93.7’s Nathan and Nat to field a team determined to beat the Handball West All Stars Team.Olympic coverage of the sport has sparked a huge interest and Nathan and Nat are determined to learn more about the sport by engaging in a handball game with their own team, The Goodlooking Keitharoonies. They will be up against existing WA all star players. Aaron Sandilands has already agreed to play in the NOVA team and the team has the support of Danny Green and Eamon Sullivan. It is the second most popular sport in the world after soccer. It is a hands-only team sport with seven players a side which involves throwing, catching, dribbling, running and shooting at indoor soccer goals outside a seven meter semi-circle. To see clips of the sport or for more information go to www.nova937.com.au or www.handballwest.org.au. To sign up for Nathan and Nat’s team, send an email to breakfast@nova937.com.au and tell them why you should be part of their team The game between The Goodlooking Keitharoonies and Handball West All Stars will be held at Joondalup Arena on Saturday September 20 at 1.30 pm.

28 November 2007 Beach handball event draws attention at Scarborough Beach

The recently developed amphitheatre at Scarborough Beach was the host for the first WA beach handball event this summer. The spectator-friendly sport caught the interest of many spectators who enquired about participation in the sport. Handball West Representative Rikke Nesbit said the amphitheatre provided a perfect venue for the sport.  ‘The amphitheatre is great for beach handball. Spectators can sit in the shade and watch with a great overview of the game,’ she said. ‘This may partly be why we’ve had such a huge expression of interest from the event,’ Event Organiser Anthony Chiappalone said. Beach handball is a fun and social sport which is easily picked up by newcomers. Handball is one of the most popular sports in the world, second only to soccer. It is currently growing in popularity in Australia. In beach handball, four players from each team are on the court. A six metre line in front of the goals is the line of defence and attack inside which only the goalkeeper has access. It shares rules with basket ball, but the ball is smaller, more steps can be taken and some physical contact is part of the game. Extra points are awarded for creative goals. Another three beach handball events will be held on Perth beaches this summer with the next event on January 28 at Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre.

7 November 2007 Beach handball events to hit Perth for the second year in a row

Beach handball, a hugely popular team sport worldwide with annual international competitions, was so popular in "on">Perth last year that four events have been arranged for Perth beaches again this summer.

Beach handball is a great spectator sport. It is fast-paced and extra points are awarded to teams for creative goals making it a fun sport to watch.

The sport is even more fun to play and events are open to all interested players. No experience is necessary.

Last year, the more than 80 participants, were very pleased with the events.

“We’ve had really positive feedback from the events with people being surprised how much fun this sport is,” Mr Ralph Bourn, last year’s organiser, said.

In beach handball, four players from each team are on the court. A six metre line in front of the goals is the line of defence and attack inside which only the goalkeeper has access. It shares rules with basket ball, but the ball is smaller, more steps can be taken and some physical contact is part of the game.

This year two handball courts will be in use to accommodate higher player numbers.

Events take place at Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre on November 24, 2007 and January 28, 2008. Another two events will be held at Cottesloe Beach on February 9 and 23, 2008. All event times are 8.30 am – 12.30 pm.

23 August 2007 European Handball: Get in the game

Handball clubs are looking for new players for what is the second most popular sport in Europe after soccer.

Handball, a mix between water polo and basket ball, is an easy and fun game. It is played on an indoor soccer court using soccer goals. A six metre line around the goals is the line of defence and attack inside which only the goal keeper has access. Goals are scored by shooting across the six-metre line with the defending team doing their best to ensure there are no free areas near the six-metre line for players to shoot from.

It is a sport well suited to both male and female players.

Handball has increased in popularity in WA over the past year and for the second time state teams will be send to the Nationals held in Tuggeranong, ACT on October 19-21, 2007.

Clubs are always looking for new enthusiastic players whether beginners or experienced. Female goal keepers are, in particular, needed.

5 June 2007, Murdoch Pumas wins European handball tournament.
Murdoch Pumas has won the first seasonal handball tournament of the year after a big increase in player numbers. With five wins and two losses, Murdoch Pumas finished one game ahead of Northern Sharks who had four wins and three losses. The two clubs are archrivals and the games leading up to the end of the season were fuelled with tension as the two teams were playing out the final results. A joy for spectators who could witness a fast game take even further speed. Murdoch Pumas Coach, Ralph Bourn said the win was largely due to a big increase in player numbers which had helped put a really good and competitive team together. For the first time in Murdoch Pumas history, the club was able to field two men's team in addition to a women's team with an emphasis on a highly competitive men's A team. It is hoped that this will bear fruit when many of the best players later this year joins the best players from Northern Sharks in a Western Australian State Team set to play other states and New Zealand in the Handball Australian Open Championships in Canberra . For those unknown to the sport, handball is an Olympic sport which is played worldwide and is as popular as soccer in many countries. It consists of seven players. 30 October 2006, Western Australia narrowly missing out on third place at the Nationals in European Handball after competing for the first time.

Western Australia missed out on the third prize at the Nationals in European Handball after losing to Queensland , the defending champions, 18-24 in the final play-off for third place.
A remarkable result as this is the first time Western Australia is competing since European handball reached Australian shores.
European handball is, after soccer, the largest team-sport worldwide played by more than 160 million people. The sport has been an Olympic event since Berlin , 1936. It is increasingly popular in Australia .
At this year's Australian Open held in Shepparton , Victoria , eight men's teams and five women's teams from all over Australia as well as New Zealand competed.
New South Wales won both the women's and men's competitions.
The Australian Handball Federation has called it ‘the biggest Australian handball event since the Olympic Games in 2000'.
The Federation congratulated Western Australia for their success and complimented them for their technically sound and fair-minded play.
Handball West President, Ben Birkenhake, said he was pleased with the result.
“ Western Australia has demonstrated that they are capable of competing in this sport,” he said.
“This has already attracted attention from interstate players of which some are now wanting to come to WA to play”.
In recent years two Western Australian clubs have been formed, Revolution Sharks Handball Club and Murdoch Pumas Handball Club.
Mr Birkenhake is hoping that more people will become involved with the sport.
“We have people available to attend schools to teach the game and anybody is welcome to come and train at the clubs which are open to both new and experienced players,” he said.
Training for the Revolution Sharks Handball Club is on Fridays from 7-8.30 pm at Revolution Sports, 37 Lemnos Street , Shenton Park while the Murdoch Pumas
Handball Club trains on Thursdays from 8.30 to 10 pm at Murdoch University Sports and Recreation Centre, South Street , Murdoch.

Although Australia competed in the sport for the first time in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the game is not well known in Western Australia and is often confused with its Irish counterpart played by slapping a ball against a wall.
